It will never be economically viable to sell full life cycle SBT.
Never.
It is scary to see how uninformed shareholders here are with Sashimi grade tuna prices.
It is almost unviable just to fatten and pen SBT now.
Tuna is just a commodity now, due to world wide ranching and just about every sea borne country having a longline fleet airfreighting fresh tuna to Japan these days.
Big dollar fish are either wild caught Jumbo (Northern) Pacific Bluefin NBT, or wild caught SBT (to a much lesser extent).
These fish are perfect and uncommon.
Ranched fish swim in a circular pen, eating each others excrement and whatever pellets or pilchards are thrown to them.
Their colour is usually poor, the shelf life is terrible and they command an inferior price for inferior quality.
It is hardly even worth catching wild fish and airfreighting them from Australia, let alone breeding and ranching them as well !!!
The kingfish program is viable, the SBT full life cycle program never will be.
I think it's just being used as a threat to keep the quota price down.
