Kingpins,
I would say Hong Kong, Singapore and Taiwan have more open countries than Australia to name a few. Australia has a protectionist agricultural policy (under the guise of quarantine) and imposes import taxes on cars and some textiles (the latter I think still exist).
A tax on imports makes my car, TV, Fridge, Shoes Cloths more expensive, which is a tax by stealth. And subsidising manufacturers? Where does the money come from to do that - me as a taxpayer.
So your argument for lowering tax is inconsistent with your argument for subsidising manufacturers.
On tax I agree there are some expenditures we should cut so that we can reduce income tax:
- Private Health Insurance Rebate
- Superannuation concessions for rich people
- Baby bonus
- Child Care payments for rich people
- Subsidies for private schools
Get rid of that lot and there will be some decent tax cuts available.
