The pilot for a new soap opera "Gold Trek" debuted recently to good reviews. Gold Trek had its first syndicated show this week and has gone into production, which is a considerably better result than the real life events on which it was modeled.
The source of the science fiction tale, a tongue in cheek expose set in an imaginary world, parallels real life events in a small outback town. The plot inspiration revolves around the daily events at a small mining company that is getting smaller. Gold Trek relies on the absence of the ridiculously named di-lithium gold crystals set in empty deep space, an obvious metaphor for mining. In Gold Trek, real life imitates art, where in real life gold is the focus of a ridiculous idea of a mining company mining for gold. Quite a bit of spin is involved in both.
In the pilot many new characters were introduced, only to have them "eliminated" in the closing scenes. Fresh characters are expected in later episodes. As usual for the soap opera genre, we can expect everything old to be new again as twists in the plot exhume previously buried cast members.
Jumpstart, the creator of the series, spent a significant 5 figure sum doing background research on the ludicrous idea behind the show. "I wanted to show how human foleys and lynch mobs can combine and run out of control much longer than anyone can imagine. Its a fusion of Fawlty Towers existing in Ramsey Street. Whacky characters in implausible plots."
The plot plummets out of control faster than the mining companies share price, and that is saying something. Gold Trek's fictional characters grapple with real world problems, unlike its doppelganger which has real characters grappling with fictional profit.
The show can be seen at irregular times on the HotCopper website, but Blockbuster side-splitting double events are planned for each quarter. For fans that is only two weeks away, maybe four, possibly six. This reviewer has enjoyed this fresh new farcical show but has doubts whether the inspiration behind the show will remain an inspiration for very long.
