    All takeovers are different. Some bidding companies will offer cash, some scrip (ie their shares) and some a combination. Often owning shares of an OS company is problematic so selling on market at the takeover price can make life easier. Often the original takeover price will be improved apon by the bidding company or other bidders who may enter the fray.
