Your question and people's responses has got me thinking also. I used to think anything organic could just be thrown into the grown and the results would be positive following the break down. Obviously not. The consensus seems to be to have a balanced compost heap and then add the material to the soil.
That probably explains why sometimes I add 'this and that' and some plants just look at me and say 'No chance', and die. Guess the balance was out of whack. Like sometimes too much nitrogen may promote leaf growth and no fuit setting. Time to 'listen' to my garden!
