Your numbers on private health insurance and school fees assume that a everyone would drop out of both.

Private health insurance would be continued for most people over the Medicare surcharge limit as it works out cheaper (this is the only reason I started private health cover). Also many people with private cover go public anyway due to there being no gap. So it should produce a cost saving.

Private schools. Similar arguments. I doubt many parents paying $25k a year for school fees are going to pull their kids out when the fees go to $28k a year so there would be cost savings. It also ignores the fact that public schools are turning into schools for poorer parents due to the lack of funds for public schools and excess funds for private schools. This is to the detriment of children as it is better to have socially mixed schools otherwise private school kids think everyone has a new 3 series as their second car, Muslim and Jewish school kids think other kids are different and inferior and kids from poor public schools do not meet many kids that provide an alternate view of opportunities.

As an aside met a guy I used to work with for lunch recently. He had been working overseas for a few years. He whinged about taxes and how expensive it is to bring up kids in Sydney. He has kids in elite private schools, a big house an expensive suburb and would earn somewhere between half and one million dollars a year!
