barrelnut, I'll agree that we disagree on this.

In your opinion would it be preferable to do absolutely nothing like all of our neighbours who have tried and given up, and let the morning glory keep on creating it's own mononculture. That's what existed when we bought the place, remnant rain forest that was slowly being gobbbled up with the stuff. We could hear water running but couldn't even see the creeks, we could see the shape of trees but couldn't actually see them. Not much birdlife, fungi or frogs. Mononcultures stifle microclimates and seriously inhibit biodiversity. We initially tried removal only by hand beacuse we do care about the environment and all in it but we ended up going backwards. Apart from the morning glory resuming its destruction a world of new weeds found their way to where the light has been let in. We found that by using the afore-mentioned method of removal AND replanting straight away with primary, endemic and canopying trees the battle could be slowly won. We now have a plethora of birds, native animals, bats, fungi, snakes and a beautiful rainforest. We have taken up Land for Wildlife, been offered financial assistance from hte local council(in the form of trees and grants, which we have not taken up because our privacy reigns supreme) It has taken 8 years and we have still not finished, probably never will, but sometimes you have to have a bigger picture and go with what's achievable, short term and long term and how much maintenance you want to be doing with our baby-boomer but ageing bodies. Horses for courses barrelnut.
