In March 2001 BHP announced it would formally merge with the South African company PLC to become what we now know as BHP Billiton. On the 15/072002 the Steel making arm of BHP spun off and merged with Australian Iron and Steel and John Lysaght Aust to become Bluescope Steel. They are still manufacturing steel in the Illawarra and employ about 6,000 people. It is a false statement to say we import all our steel, Bluescope Steel also has plants in Indonesia, Thailand and Vietnam. Hundreds of thousands of Aussie homes sport colorbond steel roofs, fences,water tanks, gutters etc all manufactured by BSL at their Port Kembla works.
