GST as a regressive tax was an unfair imposition on the less well-off in our community. Sure it ticks the boxes if your an economic rationalist or stand to gain but economics 101 is clear that is is not fair on the less-advantaged. Australia has the fourth largest disparity between rich and poor in the western world and this among other things has contributed to it. Without such taxes the average worker would be less troubled by perceived increases in living costs.
