if you use a 240 volt powered phone today, like most cordless phones, and there is a power failure, you will not be able to make or receive calls, regardless of whether you have installed a backup battery or not.
What a lot of hot air over nothing. The NBN is an improvement over today's cordless phone as it allows battery back up.
