rare earths not exported out of fremantle

Mining company Lynas Corporation has moved to clarify reports that it has been exporting low level radioactive material through Fremantle Port.

The company has been under scrutiny over its proposal to export Rare Earths from its Mount Weld mine in Western Australia to Malaysia.

On the weekend, Greens MP Robin Chapple told the ABC that the material should not have been exported to Malaysia where it becomes a problem for the Malaysian people.

Mr Chapple's comments followed a protest in Kuala Lumpur against the company's plans to build a refinery in Malaysia.

But a spokesman for the Lynas Corporation says the company has not started transporting Rare Earths through Fremantle.

The company concedes that the material contains a small amount of low-level radioactive thorium but says it is not classified as a dangerous good and does not pose any risk to human health.
