As a local I would be very sceptical of using a turnout at Byron Bay as a guage of what ordinary people think of MEL.As a farmer I know that many are concerned about possible effects on ground water but speaking to many who are members of NSW Farmer's Association they are generally supportive of the gas projects.
The US movie Gaslands has probably sparked this reaction even though most of the claims made in the movie have been debunked with facts.It seems very convienent for the protestors to ignore the differences between the gas industry in NSW and those in the US.
Reminds me of Al Gore and his inconvienent truth movie.Turns out his mansion uses as much energy in one month as the average US household uses in a year.(approx $13650 US/month).
A lot of people seem to be searching for a cause these days but don't bother to do some research and look at the bigger picture.
Casino needs jobs apart from those provided by the meatworks.I see the MEL project getting up just with a few more hurdles to be overcome.
