Woodside's former chief executive officer Don Voelte says keeping the company away from coal seam gas projects was one of his greatest achievements.

Mr Voelte finished his six year reign as CEO yesterday.

He told a business leaders forum he would like to be remembered for his decision not to pursue coal seam gas, and says he will be sleeping easier because of it.

"Come back and check four or five years from now, I think one of the greatest things I will have achieved is not taking my company into coalbed methane," he said.

Coal seam gas is being embraced in Queensland, but is not without its critics.

In some areas farmers and environmentalists have joined forces to raise their concerns about it.

Rural communities are concerned about losing prime agricultural land, and about the massive amounts of underground water that will be pumped to the surface in order to extract the gas.

Yesterday was not the first time Mr Voelte voiced concerns about coal seam gas.

He has in the past spoken about the many issues associated with it, including its low quality
