re: think again before flying qantas. tastarga Not questioning your choice or reasons but if you get the chance look up just how well the "pretty faces" of SIA dealt with the Taipei crash... it's a miracle anyone got out at all. If you ever meet a Qantas captain who has done a secondment to SIA ask them about the relationship between maintenance and on-time performance... the one which gets priority will surprise you...
Also look up the news stories in the UK papers about the SIA 747 which landed in London with less than two tonnes of fuel, less than half the legal minimum reserve... the crew did not want to "lose face" by diverting. They have come so close to disaster so often it's amazing they've only had the one crash (or two counting Silkair).
