OK Mark - let me remind you that a few days before the election, Gillard had a TV ad that went on and on and on to the point of ad nauseum every day of NO CARBON TAX which to most people would mean any other talk of carbon would not happen at least in this term. We all know pollies can backflip, but PMs with integrity will take major backflips to an election.

Now you haven't mentioned Swan's categorical statement where he laughed off such nonsense of carbon tax saying, "there will no carbon tax in the next term of government".

Swan gave the distinct impression that there would be an opportunity for the people to VOTE on it. If you don't call that outright deception, then you have a different dictionary to me.

Here is Gillard's Q&A transcript copied from your post and I have put it into paragraphs.

"Now, I did say during the last election campaign - I promised that there would be no carbon tax. That's true and I've walked away from that commitment and I'm not going to try and pretend anything else.

Now for the next paragraph. What she doesn't say is WHEN she told the people about pricing carbon and that she wanted an ETS. It may have been said before those last few days or mentioned quietly here and there. I don't remember it - only the ad nauseum TV ads of no carbon tax.

"I also said to the Australian people in the last election campaign that we needed to act on climate change. We needed to price carbon and I wanted to see an emissions trading scheme. "

So, by her own admission she gave mixed messages. The dominant message was clearly NO CARBON TAX and the quiet, barely heard message was carbon pricing.

If that's not an intent to deceive, I don't know what is...
