    Forro,

I feel sorry for guys who have bids waiting for cyclic lows that get filled on bad news. When bad news comes the first price is nearly always the highest just because those bids are still sitting there. I have messages sent to my phone with the headline of the announcement on any stocks I hold, so if something comes along that fundamentally changes value, I can get online or call the broker to adjust the orders accordingly.

    Derivatives:

If you are using an online broker you should be able to check all listed derivatives on that, and possibly trade them. You can on Commsec. I think they are listed in the weekend finance pages of broadsheets too - or at least they used to be, but it's been a long time since I've read an aussie newspaper.

They are usually written by institutions for stocks with big turnover as instruments to hedge exposure in the stocks themselves. I used to trade them (gamble), but after the GFC wipe-out, my appetite for high-risk fast turn-around trades has weakened. I definitely don't recommend it unless you have a good strategy, strict rules and want to stress yourself out watching every trade in the heads.

    BTW - I didn't see Raiderups post.
