Jaeb
I've already addressed your first issue on another thread.
Are you assuming, well I guess you are, that the ALC made no protest?
I believe that it was the ALC that drew the Governments attention to the spill.
When dredging the port Gemco also attempted to cut corners in regard to the process. Originally they just wanted to dredge allowing any sediment to simply be released into the ocean. Ultimately they were forced to build a pipeline to holding ponds to allow the manganese to settle. This was at considerable expense, they resisted, but the ALC held their ground.
On another occasion, just to provide one example of how things often work here, a dam wall in an area being mined burst releasing huge amounts of water, such that the volume would have travelled to and flooded Angurugu probably to a depth of around half a metre, by luck it was trapped in a pit. Gemco did not notify the ALC by identified channels, or immediately inform DOR. It was brought to our attention by a "whistle blower" from the company.
The ALC often undertakes mine tours to check Gemco compliance with the MMP. Sometimes it charters small planes to indertake its own surveillance.
I have posted on a number of occasions that many of the activities of Gemco have compromised cultural values including Song Lines.
There are two Facebook pages, Groote Eylandt Save Our Seas and GrooteEylandt (all one word) Save Our Seas set up by members of the public in regard to the seabed mining issue. While ALC personnel are members of both pages, as well as hundreds of others private individuals, it is not sponsored, nor does it have formal links with the ALC or the Traitional Owners.
I coordinate the TO's Campaign aginst sea bed mining- the team includes obviously the TO's, the ALC Excutive, the ALC Legal Officer, the ALC Enviro Officer, the Coordinator of the Sea Ranger Program, the Sea rangers and the CEO of the ALC as its core group, however this is not an exhaustive list.
Unlike GOT, at this point in time Gemco have made no movements on their sea based tenements; they have no defined Project either, as far as the ALC are aware.
Gemco have given written assurances that the ALC will be informed of any changes in this situation.
What is the point of this cyclical argument? You and some other posters, and other members of the forum, obviously have opinions as to how the ALC and the TO's should conduct their campaign. The manner in which the TO's and the ALC conduct their campaign in pursuing their objectives is up to them, and I would suggest that it is transparent With this you might disagree as is your right. And you may well howl at the moon in frustration, as is your right.
That you object to the manner of our campaign is your preogative and that you hold an opinion that seems to be that the ALC and Gemco are in some conspiracy against GOT is also your perogative. That you are wrong in this respect, if that is your opinion, is a matter of fact.
That you post these opinions and any other observations or speculation is also your perogative.
