Did you know that Chernoby at that stage had just added their second reactor..the 3rd completed 1981.
Now 1979 was the year I got married,and I can clearly remember the world then.
No lap tops,mobile phones,we wore silly clothes,cars were all on leaded fuel,no LPG cars,no Facebook,Google..Every one smoked cigarettes in the Movies,in Reatauarants,Hospitals.Air hostesses were classier (my wife made me add that..she was an Ansett hottie.:)
So technology/health knowledge compared to today was pretty primative...ie Chernobyl.
What caused the Meltdown in April 1986...after the 4th reactor was added.
Well guess what..they turned off all the Safety Systems while they conducted tests on the safety system.
Kiev was on high power damand..the Reactor power dropped dramatically,and they couldnt reingage the safety systems,MELTDOWN.
SO IT WAS HUMAN ERROR>>HAD THE SAFETY SYSTEMS BEEN LEFT ON>>NO DISASTER..Reactors would have cut off.
1977 Technology.
Now look at Fukushima...no human error...unlike the 31 who died from the Chernobyl explosion..Mother nature throws all bar the kitchen sink at it...no one dead..precaution evacuation..ok.
ADVANCED TECHNOLOGY.
Now..thats the world history of NUCLEAR REACTORS causing problems.
Then theres RARE EARTH.
Chinese backyard REE miners been doing it for over 30 yrs...about when you were born..if not you get my drift.
30 yr old technology,smoking a cigarette,throwing the waste over the fence...like the photo you dug up..agreed...but havent we come a long way since then.
Biggest disaster in RARE HISTORY outside China.

1980,s technology was ok..but no waste management.Rogue transport carriers dumped waste anywhere they could,was a debacle.Add choice of tailings...TIN..good one.
Enter State Of the Art LAMP.
Fukushima learnt from Cherynobyl,the next Nuclear Reactor will learn from Fukushima.
LYC has learnt from Bukit.
