The answer is never. Helping others is always a worthwhile cause yak. The moment you begin to question, you'll stop dead on your tracks and do nothing. So, do nothing. Just don't be too surprised if when you're drowning, the passer-by says to you, hang on, I'll check to see if it's worth while throwing you a line!
