I think the problem with the approach of Dawes, if that is his approach, is that it's overtly paternalistic...him knowing what's best etc and that notion of a "proper" future. They want to decide their own destiny...and they have a lot of choices. It's not like they're some poor bugger me mob with no industry and no economic choices.
They are extremely bloody lucky as fate would have it, and relatively speaking they are economically well off...and to their credit they spread resources around unlike some other aboriginal cultures where some families hold on to the money for themselves and don't distribute it.
They are seeking a blance between the incursion of the west and their own culture...but they will just not compromise on those song lines. My missus Nancy I think summed it up best when she said in that ABC interview..."nobody is gonna interfere with our ancestory any more."
Honestly if Dawes and co were really concerned about the GE"s that just pack their bags and head off into the sunset...if he has their interests at heart he should listen to what they say...Tony Wurramarrba, the Chairman of the ALC, has made public statement after public statement saying, we don't want GOT..."how many times do they have to be told before they get the message?"
Whichever way this goes I'll be punching on 'til the end.
