It just seems to be the usual. No thanks even if you open or hold a door for someone.
I normally now say thanks (to a person) for being nice or using any salutation. the other thing I do is say hello such and such by looking at their tag, you get a lot more smiles that way.
Most humans like their name :-)
I reckon it is worth the effort to make a small change and say thanks.
