Just to iron out the process of shorting.
Stock gets borrowed from Prime Broker.
Trader sells in the market straight away as he is incurring borrow costs.
Buys back the stock to close out short position.
And delivers stock (not value) to the PB and pockets the difference. (assuming winning trade)
An announced delay will - on the day - be greeted with selling of LYC stock regardless of the perceived future earnings.
Bad news = negative stock sentiment 95% of the time.
