Courier Mail 'Editorial' July 1/11
Brisbane lawyer Larissa Waters becomes an Australian
senator today having been elected last August on the
back of an historically high vote for her party, the
Greens. While Senator Waters is starting a six year
term, she has been around politics long enough to know
that the hard work of gaining and maintaining the trust
of the Queensland public starts from day one, which is
why she should be worried about the impression her
leader has made in the past week.
In the lead-up to the Greens today assuming a balance
of power role in the Senate,Bob Brown has startled
voters throughout the country and particularly in Qld
with his views on the mining industry and foreign
investment. Not content with advocating the 'phasing
out' of the coal industry,Brown has widened his field
of attack by suggesting other mining commodities are
also not part of his utopian "carbon neutral/sunshine
and wind" future.
Senator Waters-who was given party responsibility for
mining in Parliament-should tell her leader that coal
is the country's biggest export,earning about $45B a
year and employing directly/indirectly 130,000 people,
with a sizeable proportion in Qld.Mining generally is
vital to Australia's past success, present prosperity
and future prospects, with iron ore not far behind in
terms of export earnings and employment opportunities.
The current mining boom and the economic growth it is
spurring in China,India and other parts of East and
South Asia is set to transform our economy, providing
new directions for growth and generating an investment
stream that will open up a previously unimagined range
of opportunities for our nation and its people. [UCG?
There is a need to reduce the amount of carbon and other
greenhouse gases emitted, but to suggest we can
"decarbonise" the economy and place reliance on cheap-
-and relatively clean -fossil -fuel based energy is an
environmentalist fantasy that comes from the same school
of loopy economic theorists who see economic growth as
bad and modern life as some curse of affluence. This
kind of talk frightens most Australians who understand
the history and nature of our nation and economy and
realize to 'deliberately downsize' in a fast-changing
world,is to embark on some kind of nirvana-seeking
experiment that will bequeath our children an uncertain
and difficult future.
Senator Waters should also discuss the role of foreign
investment in Australia's past, present and future
development. We are a nation of immigrants and have grown
and prospered through attracting investment from around
the world. But many of these foreign owned corporations-
and Senator Brown takes particular aim at mining giants
such as BHP-Billiton,Rio and Xtrata-also provide and
institutional wealth to millions of Australian's.
A Greens leader wiping away the tears of Australian
farmers will win some horse laughter among those in
primary industries who Senator Brown and his enviro-
mental cronies have helped close down over the years.
"What Senator Waters needs to do is tell her leader
some home truths about this state and its future or
she will have an interesting but short political career."

With court action pending...now is the perfect time for
Len Walker to present the 'facts' relating to Cougar's
closure, only this time I would suggest the media will
not be so infantile in their approach.Cougar must rise
to the occasion and tackle Bligh head on over these
draconian issues. If Len is not motivated now..give the
job to someone who is.
With good legal representation that is prepared to go
out on a limb for CXY, there is no reason why the CSG
Goliaths cannot be highlighted and made to answer for
their mismanagement so far of this nations coal, with
Cougar seen to be wearing the brunt of it.
Time Len put Mr nice guy in the top drawer for a while
and come out swinging and fight the bastards at their
own game. The Courier Mail has started the ball rolling
and its time to kick some goals, otherwise,if Len Walker
cannot defend his own turf successfully, then how is he
going to succeed in Asia?.The Chinese own their coal
and can obtain UCG technology from Russia who now have
at least six patients...with no hassle!
Kingaroy is a battle that must be won and won soundly,
IMO,otherwise all that will remain of this fiasco in
years to come will be [as one poster suggested] a field
of rusted pipes. Then future generations will be left to wonder.
....what might have been.
Time to take a feather out of the overseas rioters hats
and take to the streets [its coming] and demonstrate
for the injustices that are happening to this country of
ours on a regular basis.Present Labor Governments will
eventually fade into the history books and I hope their
legacy won't take a generation [or more] to recover from
their abuse.
Cheap abundant electricity..only one way to go...UCG!
HM.
