I try to stop "stuff" coming in the house in the first place so I do not have to throw it out later. Both me and the wife are good at not buying stuff we don't use but with kids, stuff inevitably comes in via presents etc. Books are good but $10 pieces of plastic crap made in china is not my idea of a good present.
Unfortunately, once the stuff gets in, it is hard to get out as my wife hates throwing things out, even the $10 plastic crap.
