It's not so much a question of any particular person being controlled but rather society as a whole( or at least a large chunk of it).
Some of the sharpest people out there are those whose jobs are to persuade us one way or another. Probably impossible to avoid completely this side of living in a cave (without TV).Is also an advantage to accept that we are all subject to insidious influence, that offers some partial protection at least, rather than believing one is impervious.
I do agree that there is no one person who "controls" the public mind but there are a lot of powerful interest groups who have the means and motive to persuade a fair portion of the population, and that is all that is required, not getting to every last person.
