I'm no expert but my basic understanding is that aircore drilling is appropriate when host bedrock lies under a layer of clay or sand dunes (as I think is the case at Tasiast South).
This method of drilling is a relatively cost effective way of collecting samples of the basement to determine its geochemistry and potential to host gold mineralisation.
Results from aircore drilling are then used to identify targets for deeper diamond drilling.
