Dear Sludge...the issue has never been the "grunt" factor ie torque. The sticking point when it was positioning itself for Geo work was in the capability of the multi-head hammers and whether they would perform at high temperatures through granite etc. What stopped them at Merredin was that the drill hit an unexpected high pressure water pocket and caused some serious problems as the BOP was only rated at 5000 psi and not sufficient to prevent a mini-disaster. Hence now a 10000 psi BOP is being fitted. The Merredin disaster was unfortunate and unforseen. The drill was never designed to encounter such an event ...but that issue has now been adressed and "the boys" have switched their marketing emphasis to O&G and rejigged the rig to handle this "lucrative" niche....L...:o)
