    My guess is that all religions grow and wane in long cycles.

    The high birth rate in many islamic countries is indeed one of the many factors behind the growth of islam.

    Also, the one way street of tolerance pointed out in the article, where the catholic churches have defended the right of islam to exist equally in their midst without any reciprocal rights being even thought of possible as being part of the bargain.

    This acceptance and equivalence has been given to islam not just by the church, but enshrined in the laws of the governments of most western countries with the same denial of reciprocal rights in other countries.

    I would imagine that this will change over time as will the unnaturally high birth rates, and that the new, younger and more vital pope will revitalize the catholic church and set a more sensible agenda for their interactions with islam.
