Posted some of this in another forum, but probably applicable here too seeing I went to the trouble of finding the info and formatting it for a HC post...lol

The UN made a statement in December last year that most of Australia's detainees should be sent to where they came from. And an article in the Malaysian Insider mentions concerns that many of the Australian boat arrivals are not genuine refugees and could pose security risks. Both articles are below.

    -------------------------

This from The Malaysian Insider by Shazwan Mustafa Kamal (today's article):
"These 800 boatpeople who are newly-arrived in Australia would not have been screened by UNHCR, thus they are likely not genuine refugees at all," said Kok in a statement, adding that the backgrounds, language ability, work skills of the 800 were currently "unclear and dubious.""
Malaysia-Aussie refugee swap national security risk, says Kok

And this from December last year where the UN were indicating that many of our detainees were not genuine refugees. Full article from SMH by Josh Gordon and Jessica Wright:
"AUSTRALIA'S immigration detention system is being clogged by growing numbers of rejected asylum seekers who should be sent home, the United Nations refugee agency has warned.

UNHCR regional representative Richard Towle said large numbers of people now coming through the asylum system in Australia were not refugees and ''the challenge is how to find fair and humane and effective ways of allowing them to leave this country to go home''."

    Send detainees home, says UN
