Agree what you say are the words that Alan Joyce used in his briefings about the changes to be made at qantas. I just translated into vernacular Joyce's comments as I heard them.
He's reducing staff by some 1,000. He's cutting routes claiming profitability issues. The rest to my ears was management spin to put a nice face/gloss on what was otherwise a retreat.
If it is so hard to make money why are the other airlines still happy to fly those routes? The qantas flights I've flown on those routes have all been full so it shouldn't be a "bums on seats" issue. As others have noted, the service on those routes has not been very good. I feel we would have been better if they left the flight staff behind on the ground (pilots excepted) and left us to ourselves.
Agree there is the possibility of growth in Asia, S. America and even Africa. But if they can't keep up with the preasure they're under already how will they make it work in those emerging markets where the airlines they supposedly can't compete with already originate and fly?
