Interesting thoughts drafter!!
The FDA has today approved the first gene targeted drug. Zelboraf is the first approved drug to use this approach to treat melanoma. In terms of efficiacy, it is miles behind some of the stuff being developed now. They approved it early too, which is a good sign that they are willing to fast track drugs that are a last resort for some patients.
I can see a renewed interest online and in the media in gene therapy/RNAi since the leukemia results game out.
Some of the cutting edge research I have been following seems to encroach on BLT's patents, even though they don't directly mention ddRNAi. Whether this is a direct attempt to avoid eventually paying licence fees and royalties I don't know.
I guess it is probably best to wait for the drugs to be commercialised before BLT challenge any of this anyway. We have had a gut full of paying lawyers for the moment I think.
