The majority of people are not scientists. However, the average person can spot lies, attempts to mislead and other hypocritical practices.
However,when such hypocrisies are pointed out, it seems the alarmist immediately jumps behind a screen of "science" which is beyond the scope of an average, non-scientific person in a seeming effort to ridicule them rather than acknowledge the hypocritical issues.
For something to be believed by the public, it has to be in the light of honesty and openness, imo.
