Great post. I started my super about 14 years ago and as far as I can remember I was not told about the trailing comms. (I had a 5 minute meeting with the financial advisor to set it up and never spoke to him again). Earlier this year I switched to an SMSF.
If I can tell one horror story, recently there was a retiree on the 7.30 report who was being charged $35,000 a year in fees!
