    HC,

If the 'community' thought about it (like most other environmental issues) just a bit more deeply, the community might begin to wonder just how much force would be required to propagate fissures through numerous strata of rock spanning a vertical depth of one mile or more. AUT's brokers are reporting c100ft horizontally through laminated rock. The propagation in a vertical direction is less (stated by AUT).

The media makes money out of sensation and it is in it's interest to make up or embroider stories.

STX's interest in the Eagleford is in Texas and the TRRC has plenty of information on environmental safety measures on-line for anyone who wishes to learn the facts. You can lead a horse to water but you can't make him drink. I don't suppose that the Australian environmental requirements are any less robust.

However, there is little doubt that the returned fraccing fluid (99% water) is contaminated with chemicals and needs to be recovered and dealt with properly. But, that's the same issue as with any industrial process using water.

Contamination of aquifers by gas is possible if the well lining and its cementing is faulty where the well passes through the aquifer zones. But that's a different issue also.
