The picture is confusing, as different internet searches tend to turn up different results.

According to CurrentAnalaysis (a telecoms specialist researcher), the following is the current state of play:

"Interoute was founded in 1995 as a wholesale voice and retail/residential telephony business.

In June 1999, the company announced its plans to build a state-of-the-art pan-European fibre optic network.

The Sandoz Family Foundation, a Swiss-based private investment company, owns a majority stake in Interoute.

Headquartered in London, Interoute owns a 14,500 km fibre-optic network called i-21, linking 45 cities in nine European countries.

In July 2002, Interoute purchased key sections of KPNQwest's Ebone metropolitan area networks and backbone infrastructure connecting Munich to Vienna, Turin to Milan and Frankfurt to Strasbourg.

In November 2000, Interoute withdrew from the European retail and residential telephony business followed in May 2001 by the sale of Interoute Telecom Services (ITS), the company's UK retail and residential arm, to First National Telecom Services Ltd.

In November 2002, Interoute sold its wholesale voice operations to Wavecrest and announced that it was building a packet based next-generation voice network using Sonus Networks infrastructure.

In November 2002, Sandoz Family Foundation put Interoute's network holding company into administration.
