I was under the impression that horizontal wells suit shale type geological formations more. E.g. primarily used to enable larger area of fracking per well. Given that most conventional oilers use vertical only wells, and all the main Eagle Ford Shale oilers (AUT for an aussie example) use strictly horizontal.

From what I've gathered the oil reservoirs on a salt dome type formation tend to be smallish in size and dispersed at several different depths, hence the different hit rates of oil payloads among the wells that Maverick has drilled. Thus the vertical wells seem to be the way to go as the variable depths of the oil mean that it's more economic. The shale oil tends to be in a consistent certain depth 'sweet spot' that is more amicable to the horizontal and fracking techniques used.

Happy to be corrected by someone more knowledgeable but that's just what I've gathered from reading announcements etc.

    JM.
