"I wrote to Gillard and suggested she hand power over to Abbott."
"Why? Beacuse it is the worst of times and looks like getter worse."
I like your idea, but I think it is too late for that. If Abbott is given the opportunity to govern, he won't be governing for the remaining two years of this term, he will call an election and, with the polls the way they are, the coalition will win with a landslide, and if he times the calling of the election, he might be able to call for a half Senate election too and might win enough extra Senate seats to control the Senate which will be a disastrous outcome for Australia, in my opinion.
They will be in power for two terms and by that time the world economy will be in a much better shape and the positives flow on to Australia and they would claim credit for that, and might even be in government much longer than 2 terms.
In hindsight, if Abbott had managed to gain the support of the independents to form government, his government would be in disarray by now.
On a side note, I hope the prime minister staff has been reading the posts in this Politics Forum, as some of the things being said in some of the threads in this forum might be of interest to her.
If the situation does not improve for her government in the next 3 months or so, I hope she will see the good sense of letting someone else from her party to lead the government. If that were to happen, I feel there should be a change in the deputy prime ministership too.
