I went down to the Freo markets yesterday to check out the stop Lynas protest. There was 3 or 4 people handing out a double sided flyer about the Lamp and how once it starts radioactive gas, water and soil will rain down on Malaysia and cause harm to everyone and everything, basically it will be a repeat of the other RE plant 20 years ago.
I got a flyer and some propaganda on the way into the market, 20 minutes later when I walked out of the same protester gave me another flyer and more 'facts' about the plant. There did not seem to be much interest from the public, not many stopping or buying the stop Lynas badges or T shirts which were very well priced, nice quality shame about the slogan.
After asking a few questions they wheeled out the brains of the outfit, Lim Choong Kiow a chemical engineer who lives in Kuantan, his business card with the stop Lynas logo has the title 'Researcher', have his email if anyone would like to drop him a line.
His main points are:
Lamp is built too close to a population centre.
Operation is planned to be safe but what if something goes wrong, untreated waste water escapes, equipment failure or accident and toxic gases escape.
The stockpiling of waste material with no long term plan to deal with it.
He indicated that the construction onsite was ongoing and that now they were very unlikely to stop the Lamp as the IAEA inspection had favoured Lynas. He had little faith in the Malysian Govt doing anything to stop it also.
The 12 year tax break and the fact that only 300 jobs would be created also seem to be part of his argument.
When I suggested that maybe once it was up and running more companies will set up and use the RE products to make all sorts of things and more Jobs will be created, e.g. Siemens JV.
He was not intersted in talking about that.
Their plan while in Perth is to meet the Fremantle Mayor and MP's (green no doubt)and one of the unions (maybe MUA)to highlight the massive danger of transporting and handling the lethal Mt Weld concentrate through poplulation areas and loading onto vessels.
They are trying to draw parallel s to the lead problems of a few years ago.
I believe Lynas will transport the concentrate securly and even if there is a problem or accident the concentrate is below MRL levels anyway.
We don't have too much to worry about from these protesters they have an arua of a spent force clutching at short straws (local Fremantle hippies and tree huggers)for any sort of victory they can get.
Roll on Lamp completion and first shipment.
