Load of codswallop. If you want to chop down all the trees in the Alpine area you'll have faster fires from grassland.

These days, you'll be hard put to find two consecutive weeks to do preventative burning - sometimes you can't find two consecutive days - or more than a couple of weeks in any year. And it will get worse - in future I'd bet that the number of days when a controlled burn can be done will be fewer and farther between. Some years there won't be any suitable days.

I heard some chap on the radio - from Emergency Services - calling for year round preventative burning - lol. Try burning when it's raining heavily. Try burning when it's dry and windy and watch the fire take off.

The news of the 2006 fires didn't reach Melbourne until they could see the smoke. (I don't think Melburnians liked the smoke much.)

And the people who got fined for tree chopping did it to themselves. They just wanted to chop down trees and did it without getting permission. Their own fault - nothing to do with fire control - that was the excuse they made up afterwards and the anti-environment pro-pollution movement made the most of it.

BTW - watch out in the next year or two - lots of growth from all the La Nina rain. When it dries out again we'll have more fire risk.
