Screens are essential at our place - there's always insects buzzing around, no matter what time of year. I use eucalyptus oil (mostly) or lavender (occasionally)in a diffuser inside when I become paranoid about all of them. Which is usually after I've cleaned the windows and want them to stay that way for a while. Lemon scented geraniums and pyretheums near the back door would work quite well also. I have tried the venus fly-trap plants a couple of times but they turned up their toes. Don't think they could handle the volume anyway. Good luck.
