Like a cold case murder, after 40 years or more, evidence and conviction must be very difficult to attain.
Many innocents end up in gaol - or have been executed - whilst the real culprit goes free.
Personal spite or revenge or a grudge in some circumstances unknown to us may be a motive in someone's bringing forward such late allegations. Alternately, the allegtions may well have been true, and the alleged victim may have had terrible misgivings about bgringing the matter to light. But how do WE know?
Sen. Xenephon, by using Parlimentary privilege to name an alleged culprit, to my mind has placed himself onto very dangerous moral and ethical ground. This named person, innocent, or guilty, will now be cast for life as an alleged suspected rapist. It must be asked why the victim said nothing for all these years. However, surely it is a police, and a Church, matter.
It is up to the police, with Church co-operation, to follow this through. The name should not have been made public, in my opinion. I am not a church goer - nor a Catholic.
How can the public ever be judge or jury in such matters, unless there is compelling evidence, and credible supportive witnesses, or some sort of written evidence which has been supressed until now.
As the saying goes, truth is stranger than fiction!
