debono -mug tourists 200 days, not even 1 year, and spread out over a number of visits, wait until you've spent a year there fulltime then you will begin to be of some value. You will know when you are starting to get a handle on it when it occurs to you that the more you learn about the place the less you really understand.
Re banjar, maybe it is used in Bali, but it is only a word that can be used in many different ways. It most likely originates from the Banjarese people in Kalimantan who possibly predate the Balinese or at least share some common ancestry, or it may have derived even earlier from Malay "bandar" meaning city, or "banjir" meaning flood as the Banjarese historicaly live generally in low lying coastal areas and old river deltas.
Then of course there is this:-
    "Origins of the Banjo
Instruments with a skin stretched over a gourd or hoop have been constructed and played in the Far East, the Middle East, and Africa from early antiquity.
The slave trade brought the instrument to the Americas. The earliest reference from 1678 mentions a "banza" in Martinique. From this point forward there is consistent reference to the instrument in historical documents. In 1781 Thomas Jefferson writes: "The instrument proper to the [slaves] is the Banjar, which they brought hither from Africa.""
