It would also be interesting to know if the volume includes the actual options assignment/exercise (its not included in the price bar obviously) or merely "covering" of the long or short positions.

In any case I will agree to disagree with you re options expiry. I still hold the view that their is a lot of ACTIVITY on that day and can't be so easily divorced from the current price bar. There is still a weight of decision imposed on the market at a particular price range - whether to cover long or short, or whether to carry if one can afford to. And to close out positions, one still needs to find a willing party on the open market - and that will still create baggage on the chart.
I would still trade it the same - ie as the first possibly of a trade sequence, long or short.

And that is pretty much how we are taught to do it.
