Since political spectrum assessment instruments always place me close to the centre I feel ill-equipped to speak for 'The Left'.

Nor do I claim that 'us humans' have control over nature.

But we are able to impact natural processes in a manner that causes excesses; excessive runoff due to deforestation leading to flooding that devastates massive areas, excessive land practices leading to desertification, excessive air pollution which exacerbates global warming leading to more rapidly rising sea levels etc.

By itself a carbon tax / ETS will not solve accelerated global warming but by supporting a transition to lower emissions practices it will certainly assist.

In contrast the cost of sitting on your hands can be seen already - although due to coastal subsidence the cost of keeping Venice above water is apparent to most of us. As for actually giving manoey to big polluters, well they've already demonstrated what they'll do with it.
