"yeah good one farmboy. Its all about you. Who cares about the poor folks. Time to look at the full picture son."
I have a family member with severe mental illness. She gets a lot of benefits from the welfare system - including heavily subsidized rent and because she is on disability, not having to even apply for a job. Takes a taxi when it's raining. She complains about being bored but is in fact totally unemployable, and does not do anything to change that. 20 years of psychiatric drugs and help and she is worse than ever. I don't think she could help herself if she wanted to.
We have elderly parents existing on the pension, struggling with rises to their cost of living. We have young adult children just starting to make their way. All these people need financial help from time to time. We are like many other working families, helping those around us either in cash, time or services where we can.
The carbon tax will rise year after year until we will be struggling to meet our debt repayments and our cost of living. The compensation will not even come close I don't think. Your concern for the poor is valid and touching, but ask yourself - if I am struggling, how am I going to help others? As Abraham Lincoln said "You cannot strengthen the weak by weakening the strong".
