You must be joking when you declare that :

'far as I can see religion acts as the great pacifier'.

Tell that to the:

- thousands who were tortured to death during the Inquisition that went on for centuries;

- thousands (millions?)who were killed or maimed for life during the Crusades;

- women who were drowned to death on the basis that they were deemed to be witches;

- thousands of Protestants who, because of constant, merciless religious persecution were forced to abandon their homes in Europe and flee to America;

- people who, even now, are being tortured and/or beheaded in the name of Allah;

- people in this current era who are being blown up,all in the name of Allah;

- the countless number of Catholic women who were persuaded to have numerous children even if they couldn't afford them.

etc etc

Religion,give it the boot!
