    In its proper sense, marriage is the joining of man and wife before God.

    If the couple does not believe in God, why can't they accept a Civil Union which for all intents and purposes carries the same legal rights as "marriage" - the issue of whether the couple is M/F, M/M or F/F is not really relevant.
