Your suggestion was to "start the snow cover charts at 1990 and add them together they are in a clear uptrend"
As someone with a degree in applied physics you should know that deliberately picking the bottom of a graph and declaring an uptrend in the face of the whole graph showing a clear downtrend is scientifically useless.
