Casualization is a world trend and it pre-dates Howard and post-dates him as well.
The three single most important reasons for the trend in this country gaining momentum imho are unfair dismissal laws and the twin burden of long service leave and redundancy payments. The latter apparantly now part of entitlements even if the company goes broke. (e.g. as with Ansett led by Combet)
I feel for anybody if they cannot get finance because they are casually employed but in time that will be the norm.
Australia will regret Howard stuffing up WCs to allow the Labor party (Combet again) to demonize it because now we can't even discuss IR reform and we are going to be stuck in the 70s while the rest of the world runs past us.
You only need to see the HC tragics go to work as soon as anybody from the conservative side tries to discuss IR to see the Labor tactics that are going to hold us back.
