Firstly Germany is not quite as successful as many think and a large part of the success comes from the fact that the Euro is a lot weaker than a new Deutchmark would be. (Helps their export model driven economy). Having said all that the Germans, in general, are far more industrious, hardworking and thrifty than we are here.
The simple solution to this, like most things in economics, is to let it be sorted out by a free market. I certainly agree that the 5 million payed to this guy is a joke but hey if that's what the shareholders of Qantas want...well it's their money and they can waste it.
Qantas, just like any other company, should not have to pay and more or less than they want to. If the workers don't like it they can leave and find jobs elsewhere. If they can't find any better paying jobs than maybe the pay is not so bad?
As for the government....the biggest reason why prices are so expensive in this country is because of all the tax, regulation, protectionism, cronyism etc that goes on.
